At Domaine de Pratavone, the choice of grape varieties comes naturally. Within the Ajaccio AOP, we primarily work with native Corsican grapes, as they are deeply rooted in this land. Sciaccarellu, Niellucciu, and Vermentinu shape the identity of the estate and reflect our approach to the vineyard. Grenache, used in blends, complements certain cuvées with restraint, always in pursuit of balance. Alongside this, the estate also produces wines under the IGP designation, allowing for greater freedom. Here, we work with Biancu Gentile and Muscat à Petits Grains, as well as Syrah and Cinsault, with the same attention to the fruit and to balance.

Sciaccarellu, the emblematic grape variety of the Ajaccio AOP, is believed to have been introduced to Corsica in the 14th century, with the arrival of the Pisans on the island’s western coast. Its name comes from sciacca, referring to the crisp character of its berries, which gently shrivel as they ripen. Delicate and expressive, often compared to a wild Pinot Noir, it requires care and precision. On the granitic soils of the Taravo Valley, it reveals freshness, finesse, and elegance. It reflects both the terroir and our approach to winemaking.

Niellucciu, an ancient grape variety originating from Haute-Corse, is known in Italy as Sangiovese. At Pratavone, it finds a particular expression on our granitic soils of the Taravo valley, where it gains in balance and precision. Its supple, fleshy berries produce wines with a deep colour, marked by aromas of red and black fruits, liquorice and sometimes leather. A structural grape, Niellucciu brings backbone and depth, with an assertive tannic frame that allows it to evolve and to age well over time.

Grenache, originally from Spain, is a black grape variety known for producing dense, deeply colored wines with a generous structure. At Domaine de Pratavone, it requires particular care, especially during ageing, where time plays a key role. A grape that rewards patience, its wines open gradually over time. Used in blends, it complements the native Corsican varieties, bringing depth, richness, and balance, while respecting the identity of the wines and the framework of the Ajaccio AOP.

Vermentinu, the emblematic white grape variety of Corsica, thrives in the Ajaccio AOP, where it fully expresses the island’s character. At Pratavone, it draws its energy from the granitic soils of the Taravo Valley and the region’s dry, luminous climate. Fresh and expressive, it reveals aromas of citrus, white flowers, and Mediterranean herbs. It brings elegance and balance. A vibrant freshness and a saline edge reflect both the terroir and our approach to winemaking.

Muscat à Petits Grains is an ancient grape variety of Greek origin, cultivated around the Mediterranean since antiquity. Considered one of the oldest grape varieties in the world, it belongs to the Muscat family and is distinguished by its small clusters and thick-skinned, amber-yellow berries. At Domaine de Pratavone, it is handled with precision to preserve its natural expression and balance. It brings a more aromatic profile to the vineyard, offering a different expression that remains true to the estate’s Mediterranean character.
